Nose bleeding (epistaxis) treatment

Nosebleeds can be alarming, but they aren’t usually a sign of anything serious and can often be treated at home. They happen easily because of the position of the nose and how close the blood vessels are to the surface of its lining. The medical term is epistaxis.

The inside of your nose is full of tiny, delicate blood vessels that can be damaged and bleed easily. Consult our nose surgeon for the best treatment of nose bleeding in Hyderabad.

Nosebleeds (epistaxis) can happen for several reasons, including:

Treatment

How nosebleeds are treated

Most nosebleeds can be managed at home with simple first aid. If you see a doctor, you will be assessed to find out how serious the bleeding is and what has likely caused it, which may include looking inside the nose, checking your heart rate and blood pressure, and blood tests.

Additional treatments such as nose ointments, cautery to seal the blood vessels, or nasal packing may be needed and will be discussed with you. Talk to our ENT team if you have frequent nosebleeds you can’t prevent.

First aid for a nosebleed

  • Pinch the soft part of the nose
  • Lean forward and breathe through your mouth
  • Hold for about 10–15 minutes
  • Don’t tilt your head back
  • See a doctor if it doesn’t stop

When to see your ENT specialist

Please book an appointment promptly if:

  • You get frequent nosebleeds you can’t prevent
  • Bleeding doesn’t stop after 10–15 minutes of pressure
  • The bleeding is heavy or you feel faint
  • You take blood-thinning medicine
  • A nosebleed follows a head injury

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about nose bleeding (epistaxis) treatment.

Most nosebleeds aren’t serious and can be treated at home, because the blood vessels lining the nose are close to the surface. Frequent or heavy nosebleeds should be assessed by an ENT specialist.

After assessing the cause, treatment may include nose ointments, cautery to seal the blood vessels, or nasal packing, along with advice to prevent further bleeds.

Pinch the soft part of the nose, lean forward and breathe through your mouth, and hold for about 10 to 15 minutes. Avoid tilting the head back, and seek care if it doesn’t stop.

They are most common in children aged 2 to 10, older people, pregnant women, people on blood thinners, and people with blood clotting disorders.

See an ENT specialist for frequent nosebleeds you can’t prevent, bleeding that won’t stop after 10–15 minutes, heavy bleeding, or a nosebleed after a head injury.
