Common causes
- Middle-ear infection (otitis media)
- Allergies affecting the Eustachian tube
- The common cold or respiratory infection
- Build-up of fluid behind the eardrum
- A perforated or ruptured eardrum
Discharge or fluid from the ear can be a sign of infection and should not be ignored. Our ENT experts find the cause and treat it safely and effectively.

Fluid in the ear can be caused by inflammation or congestion that blocks the Eustachian tube — a small drainage passage in your ear. This can happen with an ear infection, allergies or the common cold.
The blockage causes fluid to become trapped in the middle ear, behind the eardrum, leading to symptoms such as muffled hearing and pressure or pain in the ear. Get treated by our ear infection specialists.
Book a ConsultationIf you notice one or more of these symptoms, it is worth getting your ears checked by an ENT specialist.
Understanding the cause helps us choose the safest, most effective treatment for you.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Infections are treated with antibiotics or eardrops, while allergies may be managed with antihistamines and decongestants to help the Eustachian tube drain.
If fluid persists despite treatment, a minor procedure such as myringotomy with grommet (ear tube) insertion may be advised to drain the fluid and restore hearing. Keeping the ear dry during recovery is important for a good outcome.
