Vasomotor (non-allergic) rhinitis treatment

Non-allergic rhinitis involves chronic sneezing and a congested nose with no clear reason. It can affect both children and adults, but it is more common after the age of 20.

Unlike allergic rhinitis, it isn’t driven by an allergy — but the symptoms can be just as bothersome. Visit our nose specialists for vasomotor (non-allergic) rhinitis treatment.

Treatment

Treatment for vasomotor rhinitis

Viral rhinitis usually clears on its own without medical treatment, and nasal decongestants can help by reducing swelling and a blocked nose. Avoiding the environmental triggers causing your symptoms is important, and corticosteroid nasal sprays can reduce inflammation and congestion.

If you don’t respond to these, your doctor may try antihistamine nasal sprays (even though it isn’t an allergy), anticholinergic nasal sprays to ease breathing and reduce mucus, sodium cromoglicate nasal spray, saline irrigation for crusting and dryness in atrophic rhinitis, or antibiotics if there is an infection.

Treatment options

  • Avoiding your triggers
  • Nasal decongestants and saline therapy
  • Corticosteroid nasal sprays
  • Antihistamine or anticholinergic nasal sprays
  • Antibiotics if there is an infection

When to see your ENT specialist

Please book an appointment promptly if:

  • Your symptoms are severe
  • Symptoms are not improving with OTC medicines or self-care
  • You have troublesome side effects from rhinitis medicines
  • Congestion is affecting your sleep or daily life
  • Symptoms keep coming back
