Understanding swimmer’s ear

Swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, develops when water gets trapped in the ear canal, creating a moist environment where bacteria can thrive. Standard treatment involves ear drops, but timely medical attention is important for more serious infections.

It can also be triggered when the ear canal’s natural defences are disturbed — for example by cotton swabs or objects in the ear. Get treated by Dr. Gouda Ramesh, swimmer’s ear specialist at the best ENT clinic.

Causes & Diagnosis

Understanding the condition

Knowing the cause helps us choose the safest, most effective treatment for you.

Why it happens

  • Water trapped in the ear canal after swimming or bathing
  • Disruption of the ear’s natural earwax defences
  • Damage to the sensitive skin of the ear canal
  • Inserting cotton swabs or objects into the ear
  • Contaminated or unclean water exposure

Moderate signs

  • Intense itching in or around the ear
  • Excessive drainage or fluid discharge
  • Partial blockage of the ear canal
  • Extensive redness or inflammation inside the ear
  • Muffled or reduced hearing

Advanced signs

  • Severe pain spreading to the face, neck or head
  • Complete blockage of the ear canal
  • Swollen lymph nodes with fever
  • Worsening symptoms despite ear drops
Treatment

How swimmer’s ear is treated

The most common treatment for swimmer’s ear is antibiotic ear drops, often combined with a steroid to reduce swelling. If the infection worsens, oral antibiotics may be added, and antifungal medication is used if a fungus is involved.

With prompt treatment, swimmer’s ear usually clears within about a week. Keeping the ear clean and dry during recovery helps healing and lowers the chance of it returning.

Prevention — keep ears dry

  • Wear clean earplugs while swimming
  • Use a shower cap to keep water out while bathing
  • Place cotton balls in the ears when washing your hair
  • Dry ears gently with a clean towel afterwards
  • Tilt your head and pull the earlobe to drain water
  • Use a hairdryer on the lowest, coolest setting

When to see your ENT specialist

Please book an appointment promptly if you experience any of the following:

  • You have severe or worsening ear pain
  • The ear canal is completely blocked
  • You develop a fever or swollen glands
  • There is discharge or noticeable hearing loss
  • Symptoms do not improve within a few days
